Facial Emotion Recognition in Sleep Deprivation: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Objectives: Sleep deprivation (SD) has detrimental effects on cognition. Emotional processing, a critical component of social cognition, is also affected by SD. However, current research how SD affects emotion recognition and the specific that declines with inconsistent. The present study meta-analyzed results studies examining category changes in compared controls. Methods: PubMed, Web Science, Embase, PsychINFO, MEDLINE, China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases were searched. Studies impact acute or insomnia emotional participants aged 18 years older included this review. JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist GRADE approach used to assess quality evidence. Results: Twelve 414 399 control meta-analysis. group performed poorer facial sadness (MD = –4.35; 95% CI, –7.99 –0.71) happiness –1.75; –3.25 –0.26) than (normal sleep condition). reaction time was significantly longer for all categories. intensity rating emotions showed no difference between two groups. Conclusions: slows individuals’ reactions tasks weakens their ability recognize happiness. Future should identify SD, duration, recovery different types recognition.
